On first sight, Nobubele Public School, a primary school in Tarkastad is like any other rural or small town school. Tarkastad is a small modest farming town in the Eastern Cape. However, the town’s unassuming nature has no bearing on the colourful and joyous environment the young Nobubele students have created for themselves.
The school was established to educate the local township children whose parents are mostly employed on farms. According to the teachers, most of whom had worked in the school since the late 1980s, a lot of the kids in the school are being taken care of by their grandparents or extended family members who either stopped working at the farms or are employed in town.
This photo series explores the school through the eyes of the children on a very special day for them – the last day of school. It details their joy playing in the playground, cleaning their classrooms for the upcoming term, the school kitchen they get served from and other things they get up to.
